Marcus Märtens

Marcus Märtens co-leads the Data Science team of the TSUKIMI mission, which studies lunar resources using terahertz remote sensing. Professor Yasuko Kasai is the mission's principal investigator.

Prof. Marcus Märtens is a computer scientist whose research spans optimization, machine learning, and evolutionary computation applied to complex systems. He is an expert in spacecraft trajectory optimization and has participated in multiple editions of the Global Trajectory Optimization Competition (GTOC) as an integral member of the European Space Agency team, consistently achieving high-ranking results. His interdisciplinary work has been published across domains including network science, epidemic modeling, neuroscience, cybersecurity, gaming, and aerospace engineering. As a former Research Fellow of the European Space Agency’s Advanced Concepts Team, he led innovation activities in artificial intelligence, including the organization of international scientific data science challenges on the Kelvin competition platform. His current research at the Institute of Science Tokyo focuses on data science aspects of planetary exploration, with particular emphasis on the Moon.
